First of all, you should know about visa exemption for US citizens to enter Phu Quoc island:

Phu Quoc island exempts every citizen to apply for Vietnam visa. You can stay in this island for not more than 30 days with tourism purpose. Therefore, no matter which nationality you are, you can totally enter Vietnam to visit Phu Quoc this island without Vietnam visa.

However, from the 31st day or if you are going to travel to other places outside Phu Quoc, Vietnam visa will be required.

For your question, you need to apply for Vietnam visa. Although you were born in Vietnam, but you are now American passport holder, so you need to do it as an American citizen.

There are 2 types of online visas:

Electronic visa (E-visa)

Vietnamese government allows America which is one of 80 countries to be able to apply for E-visa, included USA. With E-visa, you can stay for not more than 30 days with single entry. From the 31st day, extension visa will be required.

In addition, E-visa is accepted through 8 international airports, 16 border gates and 9 sea ports. It is more optional to enter Vietnam.

Visa On Arrival

This visa is also a type of online visa. Every citizen in the world can apply for it to enter Vietnam.

With Visa On Arrival, you can stay in Vietnam from 1 month to 12 months with single or multiple entry. After its expired date, you need to extend your visa to stay longer.

In addition, Visa On Arrival is just accepted through 6 international airports. However, it is more functional than E-visa.

Therefore, the choice depends on your plan: the length of stay, the purpose of trip, the type of visa (single or multiple entry), etc. E-visa or Visa On Arrival is probably suitable.
